KinKare is an independent community organisation proudly auspiced by Connect the Coast Inc. It has representation on the forum of Older People Speak Out and the Council of Grandparents.

KinKare has made representation for its members in many arenas, some of the most notable being:

1. Giving evidence to the John Howard inquiry into the plight of children after family breakdown

2. Appearing before the CMC inquiry into the operations of the Queensland Department of Family Services

3. A personal audience with Mike Reynolds MP, then Minister for the Department for Child Safety and Seniors

4. Speaking personally with Mr Lawrence Springborg MP, who at the time was the Leader of the Opposition

5. Finding personal solutions for the concerns of individual members.

6. Responding to numerous surveys, attending seminars and attending media events including:

• Being on radio and TV, both nationally and in Queensland, in order to gain support for relative carers

• Seniors Interest (Department of Families) survey

• COTA/NS inquiry into the plight of grandparents for Larry Anthony MP

• Department of Families discussion paper ‘Stopping the Drift’ (the new department is Child Safety and the new paper is called ‘Improving Permanency for Children in Care’); we have been involved in both

• National Media Awards for the realistic portrayal of older people

• Training seminars for volunteer organisations

• A presentation by Barbara Holborow, a retired NSW Magistrates Court judge

• Older People Speak Out forum attended by Senator John Cherry, where grandparents issues were discussed

• Attending courses to gain expertise in writing articles to attract worthwhile media attention.

KinKare’s philosophy is to work alongside all levels of government apolitically, with all aspects of the business community, and beside other service providers, to give the most comprehensive service possible to grandparents through every avenue.

We are the only grandparent support group which can lay claim to all of the above activities.

Accordingly, KinKare is represented on local service provider committees and advises those wanting to start new groups to do the same.
